How to Make Money Doing Phone Sex: Track Caller Notes

You cannot remember forty callers. Your notes can, and they are the only part of this job where ten seconds of typing pays you back a month later.

What belongs in your notes

Not "nice guy, 20 min." That tells you nothing you can use. Three things, one short line each:

• What he handed you about his real life. The job, the ex-wife, the truck, the town, the night shift.
• The scene you were in. If he was the neighbor last time, he is the neighbor again.
• The open loop you left him with, so you can pay it off when he calls back.

You are writing to yourself three weeks from now, when you will not remember a single thing about him.

What to leave out

• Judgments. "Weird" and "annoying" are useless on the next call, and they put you in the wrong frame before he even says hello.
• Your own lines. Write what he gave you, not what you said. His details are the ones he will be surprised you kept.

Make it land as memory, not a script

The mistake is reading the notes back like a file. "I remember you said you had a bad knee" sounds like a record. "How is the knee? Did you end up working Saturday?" sounds like you thought about him.

Lead with the small thing, not the big one. Anybody can remember his name. Remembering that his dog is named after a ball player is what makes him feel known, because he never expected you to keep it.

And ration it. One callback in the first minute, one somewhere in the middle, then let it go. Three or four in a row stops sounding like warmth and starts sounding like a sales call.

Try this

• Write a note after every call this week, even the two-minute ones, before you take the next caller. The ones you skip are always the ones who call back.
• Open every repeat call with one small detail from your notes and nothing else. Ask it as a question, then stop talking.
• At the end of the week, read your notes and mark the three callers you could run a whole call on from memory. Those are your regulars.

Nobody gets regulars by being more memorable. They get them by being the one who remembered.
